Spread the love
It’s about that time of the year when I get exceptionally excited about mescal and tequila! Can it have been a year already since Tequila and Mezcal Fest?? Last year I went to the inaugural festival of this and was blown away – not only by the quantity of exceptional spirits I quaffed over that weekend, but by the people I met there.

This festival returns again this coming weekend. Over the 19th-20th it will take over Spitalfields Market with some of the world’s best producers. The format, rock up, get a tasting glass and meander around talking to the producers and tasting. There’s lots of great street food, seminars and entertainment too. It’s a great day – see the festival link here. I’ll be posting more about it over the next few days.
Today’s post though is about the spirits though! I’ll be showcasing some of my favourite products which will be there at the weekend, and the people behind them. Hopefully you’ll get even a percentage as excited about them as I do!

First up – Del Maguey Espadin Especial 46% Mezcal and Jon Anders Fjeldsrud

This is one of my own favourites and is part of a wider range of Del Maguey products. Anyway – over to Jon, the Amathus Brand Champion of Mezcal (and Aquavit, incidentally), to explain more.
What’s your favourite Del Maguey Mezcal?
I like the Del Maguey Espadin Especial 46%, it’s one of the special mezcal from the “Vino de mezcal” series that Del Maguey do. Vino in Mexican Spanish means ‘alcohol’ and mezcal is also another word for the agave. As well as this, the root of the word mezcal comes from Nahuatl mexcalli metl and ixcalli which means “oven-cooked/roasted agave.
The Espadin Especial, is made from Espadin agaves at the same secret village as the Tobala. We call the palenquero (distiller) El Rey (the king), just because he is so good at his job. If anyone thinks Espadin agave is boring, just because it’s the most common agave, they should try this one – it is absolute amazing.”

How do you like to drink it?
“I like drinking it neat, because that’s the way the palenqueros drink it (or Zapotec farmers that produces the mezcal drinks it).”

 The mescal itself….
Espadin Especial is deliciously floral with a slight note of vanilla, citrus and a tropical note of pineapple with a bit of a caramel or butterscotch. Especial finishes with a saline quality that leaves you salivating for more.

Where to get it…
This mezcal can be bought as a serve at El Camion or El Nivel bars in Covent Garden, or by the bottle at the Amathus stores (Soho, The City or Knightsbridge).
