This month FoodGoblin leaves the bustling streets of London to explore a new and exciting frontier; one of colour, corn and chilli where the visitor flirts with scorching heat in both climate and cuisine. This month we head to Mexico.
This is not my first dalliance with Mexico. Those of you who follow regularly will know that in 2011 on a food tour across the States I explored the concepts of Mexican food and its interfaces with the neighbouring US. Before that I sailed the Sea of Cortez, scuba diving along the coast of Cabo San Lucas, dipping ashore only for fish tacos and sunscreen. Certainly, I considered myself culturally acquainted. When I explained this to my host and named the places I had visited, he shook his head and laughed: ‘Oh no, that is not Mexico. No. I will show you our real country.’ At the time, I didn’t understand but by the end of our spell he’d unlocked a new country for me; one departed from traps and tourists, unique, richly Mexican. These next few posts dive into the heart of this and if my articles transmit but a fraction of the passion and culture I experienced there, I’ll consider them a success.
By means of Aeromexico airline, I travel to the historic town of San Miguel de Allende in Central Mexico to explore the organic food movement burgeoning there and wander the colonial streets that sprawl in shades of terracotta. Then to the country’s capital, Mexico City, to learn more about life in this vast metropolis, the largest in the Western Hemisphere and called home by over 21 million people.
I invite you to follow me on my journey; to learn as I learned, to sit at many wonderful dinner tables along the way and be steeped in the culture of this proud and ancient nation.
Keep posted here for more posts over the coming period…
