If you're searching for sushi so smooth it's like butter and feels like it melts in your mouth – that’s what you'll get at Takahashi, a modest pocket of a restaurant in South Wimbledon, capable of 20 covers at a push. We took a selection from the specials and regular menu and were not left disappointed.
The Wagyu Nigiri is a must. Fresh, flavoursome and both buttery and rich at the same time. This is Joshu Wagyu beef from Japan, one of the highest grades available and it sure does taste like it. It comes already seasoned, with the perfect amount of wasabi and seasoning added, and no soy needed for salt. That’s what stands out about Takahashi, dishes arrive to the table exactly as they should – immaculate, seasoned without the need to dive into the soy or wasabi.
The Spicy Hamachi Maki again may seem like a regular plate of sushi but the delicacy of flavour and spice is bang on. I loved the the Hamachi Carpaccio and the Takahashi speciality of Crispy Duke of Berkshire pork belly with aubergine miso too. I was pleased to see that the non-fish dishes were still stand out and in line with the quality of the sushi, sashimi and maki.
There is an air of simplicity with Takahashi which allows its food to speak for itself. There is no need for Roka theatrics or a fussy décor to match; the quality of dishes comes through and the service matches this with quiet, knowledgeable efficiency. There is no hype to live up to, yet. But don’t take my word for it, try it yourself, if you’re able to bagsy a table.
This is most definitely sushi, but on a level unlike any other you will have had before.
10 dishes with drinks: £120.
